Our Story: Why Pamoja Exists
At our core, we believe in a simple, ancient truth: breaking bread is the foundation of community. Evidence shows that communal food sharing was one of the first human social activities, predating even our mastery of fire.
Yet today, we have lost this art.
We live in a world of profound disconnection—urban anonymity, eating alone while staring at screens. We also live in a world of systemic waste, where tons of perfect food from caterers, markets, and our own homes are discarded daily, while artisans in the Global South are disconnected from fair-market access.
Our communication tools are broken. A desperate Instagram story from a caterer with surplus food is a gamble, lost in the noise of algorithms. This is not a system.
Pamoja (Swahili for "Together") is our answer.
We Are Not a Tech Company. We Are an Act of Activism.
We are a community-run, co-operative platform built to solve these problems directly. We are not a "Big Tech" startup, and we will never be funded by venture capital. Our platform is funded by its own ecosystem—by the profits from our premium “Sankofa - Culinary Journey Through Africa” experiences and by our Patron members.
This keeps us accountable to our only mission: to serve the community.
Our Mission: A Three-Pillar Platform
1. To Combat Food Waste (The Surplus Hub & Communal Table)
We provide a direct, reliable, and noise-free utility. Our app gives caterers and local markets a tool to post real-time alerts for surplus food. It empowers neighbors to share excess groceries before they travel. It’s a simple tool to stop waste and feed our community.
2. To Empower Global Artisans (The Pamoja Marketplace)
We are a non-profit, fair-trade marketplace for artisans with “Global Majority” backgrounds. We platform their cosmetics, crafts, and wares, and 100% of the proceeds from their work go directly to them. This creates a tangible, economic bridge from our community in Berlin to our roots.
3. To Rebuild Community (The Passport & Sankofa)
We are a hub for connection. Our Passport feature promotes other independent, local supper clubs (of all world cuisines) to our members. And our Sankofa dinners provide the "soul" of our mission—immersive journeys of African food and art that fund this entire project.
"Exclusive" Redefined
We must be clear. Our platform is exclusive. We are exclusive against hate, racism, exploitation, all forms of discrimination, and the systems that enable food waste.
We are building a truly safe, curated space. Pamoja is the "how," but Sankofa is the "why." We invite you to join us.
