About Sankofa: The Soul of Our Journey
Sankofa (n.)
A word from the Akan language of Ghana. It comes from the phrase:
“Se wo were fi na wosankofa a yenkyi.”
“It is not wrong to go back for what you have forgotten.”
Meaning
Literally: “Go back and fetch it.”
Symbolically: It teaches that we must return to our roots, learn from the past, and bring its wisdom
This is the heart of our mission. In a world of urban anonymity, we are reclaiming the lost art of communal eating—a practice that evidence shows predates even the discovery of fire. Sankofa is our premier cultural salon, a space designed to do just that.
Sankofa is not just a dinner; it is a multi-sensory journey.
Our events are a deep, immersive dive into the heritage of the African continent. Each exclusive gathering is a complete experience, where we pair a meticulously researched, 3-course fine-dining menu with authentic, captivating artistic performances.
One night, you might be savoring the spices of West Africa while watching a short film from a Ghanaian director. The next, you could be exploring the flavors of the Horn of Africa to the sounds of live Ethio-jazz.
To take our guests on a true continental journey, our dinner series alternates, featuring cuisine and art from the four corners of Africa: North, South, East, and West.
A Note on "Exclusive" vs. "Inclusive"
You will see us use the word "exclusive," and we do so intentionally.
We’ve all been to "inclusive" spaces that felt performative. Too often, the word "inclusive" has lost its meaning. It allows organizers to rest on their laurels, devolving into a token gesture. In these very spaces, many of us—especially from global majority backgrounds—still face the same microaggressions, tokenism, or blatant discrimination.
Sankofa strives to be different.
We are exclusive in the sense of excluding the things that make a community feel unsafe.
We are excluding hate.
We are excluding racism, ableism, and classism.
We are excluding all forms of discrimination.
We are excluding exploitative practices and systemic waste.
We are not just hoping for a safe space; we are actively curating one. This is a private, safe, and respectful environment welcoming everyone who shares these values.
Our Connection to Pamoja
Sankofa is the "Why" behind our entire ecosystem. It is our profit-generating, cultural anchor. The success and beauty of these premium events directly fund the "How": our community-first platform, Pamoja, which combats food waste and empowers global artisans.
Accessing the Journey
Attendance at these exclusive Sankofa events is one of the primary benefits of our community. While some tickets may be available to the public, our Patron Members receive significant discounts and priority, early-bird access to all bookings, ensuring they always have a seat at the table.
